After having been involved with traditional flamenco for many years Anet Fröhlicher, the artistic director and choreographer of the company el contrabando, devoted herself to contemporary, experimental flamenco dance. Since then, she has been addressing the question of how this art form, which is shaped by traditions and, in part, fraught with clichés and pathos, can be placed in new contexts and staged at a distance from its conventional styles and aesthetic obligations. As someone from Switzerland she encounters flamenco “from the outside”, which gives her the necessary freedom to probe new structures uncompromisingly. It is her objective to position flamenco dance in the avant-garde of contemporary dance creation, thus contributing to its growing perception as contemporary stage art.

Education in flamenco dance and classical ballet in Madrid, Berlin and Bern. Further training in contemporary dance.
